Steps to Resolve a My Cloud Not Entering Sleep or Standby Mode



Description


It does not enter sleep or standby mode.
This can be caused by:

  • Cloud Service turned on.
  • iOS or Android mobile apps.
  • Firmware updating.
  • macOS Power Nap queries (default = enabled).
  • SMB (Samba) queries by computers on the network.
  • Network, Router, ISP queries.
  • Third-party apps installed.
  • Third-party Network, Anti Virus, Malware software.
  • Third-party backup software.
  • Smart TV network queries.
  • File system errors.
  • Hard drive errors.

 


Resolution


  • Use these steps to troubleshoot.

  • Try one at a time.
    Test again before doing the the next step.

  • Make sure it is on the latest firmware.

  • Features and options will vary by model and Firmware. (OS 3 vs OS 5)

Remote Access

  1. Turn off Cloud / Remote Access.
  2. Reboot.
 

Third-Party Apps

  1. Turn off third party apps.
  2. Reboot.

USB Drives

  1. Safe eject and remove from the My Cloud.
  2. Reboot.
 

Product Improvement Program (PIP)

Turn it off..

  • Click the Circled Question Mark .
    It is on the right hand side of the dashboard next to the Alerts and Logout.
  • Click Support.
  • Scroll down.
    Turn off Product Improvement Participation.
 

Backups and Safepoints

  1. Turn off all My Cloud backup jobs and Safepoints.
  2. Stop Windows, macOS and third-party app backups going to it.
 

General Settings

Turn these off.

     Settings -> General

  • NTP Service
  • Remote / Cloud Access
  • USB Content Availability
  • Dashboard Cloud Access
  • Power Schedule
  • Time Machine Backup
  • Analytics opt-in (Do not share)
 

Networking

Turn these off.

    Settings -> Network

  • SSH
  • FTP
  • AFP Service
  • NFS Service
  • WebDav Service
  • SNMP
  • Dynamic DNS
  • Network UPS
  • All Windows Services
  • Remote Services
  • Network UPS


 

Media (OS 3 Only)

Turn these off.

Settings -> Media

  • DLNA Media Server
  • iTunes Server
 

Utilities

Turn off these.

 Settings -> Utilities

  • Extended Logging
  • Flash System LED
 

Notifications (OS 5 Only

Turn these off.

 Settings -> Notifications

  • Alert Emails
  • SMS

Firmware Update

Turn this off.

Settings -> Firmware Update

  • Enable Auto Update
 

WD Software and Apps

 

Stop all access.

  • WD Smartware
  • WD QuickView
  • WD Access
  • WD Sync
  • WD Acronis True Image
  • Mobile App
    Stop Auto-Backup
 

Windows, macOS and Third-Party Software

Stop all access to the My Cloud

  • Windows Backup
  • macOS Time Machine
  • macOS Power Nap
  • Network and File scanning software
  • Anti Virus, Malware Scans
  • Any software that can access the network
 

macOS AFP and Power Nap

Power Nap is on by default.
It will query the My Cloud once an hour when macOS is in a low power state and Time Machine is turned on..

Router and Network Connection

  1. Remove the network cable.
  2. Power off the router.
 

Reset and Restore My Cloud

Do this as a last step.
